About Course

This course is designed to equip clinical pharmacists with the advanced knowledge necessary to manage and optimize therapeutic plans in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Participants will gain expertise in various critical topics, such as nutrition, fluid management, and neonatal respiratory conditions.
By the end of the course, attendees will have a comprehensive understanding of neonatal pharmacotherapy, enabling them to make evidence-based decisions aligned with the latest global guidelines

What Will You Learn?

  • Fluids & Electrolytes:
  • Discuss the fluid and electrolyte requirements of neonates in NICU, focusing on fluid balance, common disorders such as hyponatremia and hyperkalemia, and methods of correction.
  • Enteral Nutrition:
  • Review the fundamental principles of neonatal enteral nutrition, including breast milk, formula feeding, and the role of early nutrition in neonatal care.
  • Parenteral Nutrition:
  • Explain the importance of parenteral nutrition for neonates unable to tolerate enteral feeding, its components, and strategies to manage associated complications.
  • Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS):
  • Define and diagnose neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, emphasizing the role of surfactant therapy, respiratory support, and pharmacological management.
  • Congenital Heart Diseases:
  • Provide an overview of common congenital heart diseases affecting neonates, including diagnostic mechanisms and medical and surgical interventions.
  • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN):
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of persistent pulmonary hypertension in neonates, along with therapeutic options for effective management.
  • Neonatal Infections:
  • Explain common infections in neonates, such as sepsis and meningitis, along with diagnostic strategies and treatment protocols.
  • Shock Management:
  • Review the types of shock in neonates, such as hypovolemic and cardiogenic shock, and their management through fluids, medications, and mechanical support.
  • Thrombotic Diseases:
  • Highlight thrombotic disorders in neonates, discussing their causes, diagnosis, and available treatment options.
  • Neonatal Nephrology:
  • Cover common renal disorders in neonates, including acute kidney injury and genetic conditions, with a focus on treatment strategies.
  • Neonatal Seizure:
  • Discuss the causes of neonatal seizures and pharmacological approaches to their treatment.
  • Inborn Errors of Metabolism:
  • Define common inborn errors of metabolism, emphasizing early diagnosis and acute management through therapeutic nutrition and medications.
